A quart rating measures the drawer, not the food, and the makers do not measure it the same way. Go by the weight each brand publishes. Ninja says the 4-quart AF101 holds 2 lb of fries and the 8-quart DZ201 holds 4 lb. Philips rates the XXL at 3 lb / 7 qt and says it feeds up to 6 people. Instant says its 6-quart handles up to 6 portions, and quotes no weight at all.

Buy the smallest one that feeds your household. A bigger drawer takes longer to come up to temperature, and an air fryer you overload stops crisping and starts steaming.

02Wattage is what buys the speed

Every model here publishes its wattage except the Philips. Ninja rates the AF101 at 1550W and the DZ201 at 1760W. Cosori and Instant both rate theirs at 1700W. Watts per quart is the number that matters: the AF101 puts 1550W behind 4 quarts, which is more heat per quart than anything else on this page.

A US household circuit carries 1800W (15 amps at 120 volts). Do not share it with a microwave, or you will trip the breaker.

03Basket shape, and the parts that break

Yes, and it is what most people buy one for. The circulating air thaws and crisps at the same time, so frozen fries and nuggets do not need defrosting first. Do not guess at the time and temperature: most frozen food bags now print air fryer instructions on the back, and those come from the company that made the food.

The honest answer is that the saving is against deep frying, not against your oven. An air fryer is a small convection oven with a fast fan, and it uses about as much oil as oven baking does, which is to say a spoonful or none. If you are switching from a deep fryer you will cut a lot of fat. If you are switching from an oven you are buying speed and counter space, not health.
